The Star Wars we are familiar with is not Andor. This is stated in the film’s opening scene, which shows Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor creeping into a brothel in the rain, entering, and then killing an unintentional local police officer before killing a second one on purpose. This is a far cry from bickering droids eluding Darth Vader and his forces in terms of inciting incidents.
All of which is to say that Andor was a risk. The grounded tone of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was expanded upon in the Disney+ Original series, which made the galaxy far, far away a messier and more grounded place than it had ever been. But Tony Gilroy, the co-writer of Rogue One and the series’ creator, never thought twice about departing from what Star Wars is typically known for.
“I don’t worry about that at all,” he tells StarWars.com. “I worry about the storytelling. I worry about the logic of it. I worry about the plotting. I worry about the characters. I worry about the story making sense and things tying together.”
Gilroy’s strategy appears to have been successful as Andor has found favor with both critics and supporters. Gilroy spoke extensively with StarWars.com about the series’ illustrious debut season. The 12-episode season follows Cassian Andor as he transitions from a drifting loner to an Imperial prisoner to, at last, a supporter of the burgeoning rebellion against the Empire. It takes place five years before the events of Rogue One. There is not a single mention of Jedi throughout; fortunately, Lucasfilm and Disney were cool with that.
“I think everybody was kind of aware on their side that there was not only an opportunity, but a need for a new lane,” Gilroy says. “If there’s a billion beings in that galaxy, surely there’s a billion stories there, and they don’t all have to do with lightsabers and Jedi and Luke and Darth Vader. I mean, other people are living their lives, and there are incredible events that are happening.”
